The shield boss protected the warrior's hand that held the shield. Shields were the most common form of defence among the Vikings. They were famously and successfully used in formations, such as the shield wall. Made from fir, alder, poplar or linden, shields were often covered with linen and given a rawhide rim to increase their durability.
